The film goes into a flashback, showing Amarendra Bahubali's life. It reveals that Bahubali, despite being the rightful heir to the throne, is made a general in the army by his mother, Queen Sivagami (Ramya Krishnan). Bahubali's cousin, Bhallaladeva (Rana Daggubati), is declared the new king.

Bahubali falls in love with Devasena (Anushka Shetty), the princess of Kuntala, a neighboring kingdom. Despite Bhallaladeva also wanting to marry Devasena, Bahubali's request is accepted by Sivagami, causing tensions to rise. Bhallaladeva, fueled by jealousy and a desire for power, plots with his father, Bijjaladeva (Nassar), against Bahubali.

Sivagami, misled by Bhallaladeva's manipulations, banishes Bahubali and Devasena from the kingdom. When Bahubali returns to the palace to pledge his allegiance to the new king, he is killed by Katappa, who was duped into believing that Bahubali was a threat to the kingdom.

Back in the present, Shivudu learns about his heritage and vows to avenge his father's death. He rallies the people of Mahishmati against Bhallaladeva and, after a brutal battle, defeats him. Shivudu is then crowned king, and peace is restored to Mahishmati.

The film ends with a cliffhanger when a child asks Katappa about an empty throne shown in the credits, hinting at a possible third installment of the franchise. The movie is widely recognized for its visual effects, storytelling, and performances, making it a landmark in Indian cinema.
